Vespa helped a child with HIV get care

DSC00209
Dear Bess, Claudine, Pooja, Ashly, Lesley, David, Akiko, Sarah, Peter, Lowry, Luke and Ani, Molly, Sterling and Melinda, Thomas, Varun, Bill, Craig, Johanna, and Phillip,

Having a clinical officer at a health post is not only rare in the Lake Victoria area of Kenya, but also a blessing to those in town. Recently, Vespa (on the right) saw a young child in our Rota clinic who was not gaining weight as well as she thought they should be (not the child in this picture). A rapid HIV test done by our laboratory technician showed that they were positive for the virus. In this area where up to 50% of people are HIV+ this is not surprising and is often taken as a fact of life.

Children, however, may also have opportunistic infections and other health issues, so Vespa had our lab look for anemia and other infections. The child was started on HIV medications and is currently back home. Likely if Vespa was not available close to home the child would have been watched and cared for by the parents until they died. It is still very taboo to be HIV+ in rural Kenya and often parents do not want to know. Through education by Vespa and the HIV counselors at the dispensary, things are changing and we currently care for 40-50 HIV+ patients.

Only time will tell if things will go well for this child as his road is long and not all stories have happy endings. Your generous contributions to keep Vespa in the community for a month are vital, however, in changing the knowledge, understanding and culture regarding this disease and giving children a better chance at being diagnosed early and getting help sooner.

Angelica was helped by Vespa without a trip to the hospital

Vespa and Angelica
Dear Mary, Jeffrey, Sterling and Melinda, Sarah, Peter and Kim, Kunal, Max, Kate, Bill, Bill, Sanjiv-Rajani, Jo, and Bess,

Angelica is an 8 year old girl that was brought into our Rota, Kenya, dispensary severely dehydrated and suffering from pneumonia.  Thanks to your generous support the dispensary has a clinical officer, Vespa, rare for the region.  She was able to diagnose Angelica and treat her with oral rehydration salts, intermuscular antibiotics (see vial next to her on the desk), and amoxicillin (see the pink bottle).  Angelica spent several hours at the clinic in bed until Vespa was sure she was able to tolerate fluids and then sent home with her medications. She did well.

Dehydration from any cause is one of the top five causes of death in children in the developing world. Most of the time this is due to poor access to healthcare. Rota is the only dispensary in the Kisumu area of 2 million which provides medication to its patients and is also one of the only ones with a clinical officer. This may have well saved Angelica’s life as the nearest hospital is 15 km away and many families are unable to travel that far.

Thank you all for your generous support that makes sure Vespa can help children like Angelica for a full month!

Frances is healed from pneumonia!

Baby Frances
Dear Lhuillier,

5 month old baby Frances was seen in Gashanda, Rwanda. He had been suffering from a high fever and bad cough. His mother brought him to Humanity for Children and he was found to be both dehydrated and with pneumonia.

He was given oral rehydration salts in the clinic, which he thankfully responded well to and was sent home with extra salts.  He was also given antibiotics and asked to come back the following day for a recheck. He is now doing much better.

Pneumonia and dehydration are two of the top five killers of children under 5 in the developing world. Thanks to your donation, he and 19 other children will not have to worry about this problem!  Thank you so much for this generous gift.
